Elevation in Iron Nest is the barrel angle you raise to the target, and it depends on two things: the range to the target and the powder charge you selected.

Step 1: from your map, read the grid range from your turret to the target (the distance, not the bearing).

Step 2: pick a shell and powder charge; higher charge throws the shell farther for the same elevation, so charge and elevation trade off.

Step 3: open the in-game firing tables (or this site's Ballistic Calculator) and read the elevation that matches your range and charge for that shell type.

Step 4: raise the barrel to that elevation, lay the turret to the bearing, and fire — the same numbers always hit the same point because there is no spread.

Step 5: if impact is short or long, change only the charge or elevation by the table's correction step and keep the other fixed, so you learn the table's slope.

The Ballistic Calculator removes Step 3's lookup: enter bearing, range, charge, and shell, and it returns the elevation and predicted impact grid.
